Deconstructed Spam Musubi

I don’t know how y’all are feeling, but spring quarter has been rough, and all I want to eat are simple, comfort meals. Plain rice with kimchi and seaweed is that meal for me, but lacks substance. The Cave has been getting single-serving Spam recently, and I picked up a few packs for dinner tonight! This deconstructed Spam Musubi is the perfect simple meal absolutely anyone can make.

Ingredients

  • Spam (one pack, or two slices out of the can, per person)
  • Rice
  • Sesame Oil
  • Soy Sauce
  • Brown Sugar
  • Garlic
  • Kimchi (on the side)

Tools

  • Frying Pan
  • Spatula
  • Small Mixing Bowl

Recipe

  1. Start by putting your rice cooker on. We made two cups of rice for three people. Wait until the rice is almost done, with about 10 minutes left, before moving on to the Spam.
  2. Chop up the sliced Spam into small cubes.
  3. Heat a small amount of sesame oil in a frying pan. Once hot, add in your Spam, making sure that all pieces are flat. Flip them every minute or so until they start to take on a golden-brown color.
  4. While the spam toasts, make the sauce; into a small bowl, add a little less than 1/4 cup of soy sauce with a dash of water. Then add a teaspoon of brown sugar and a teaspoon of minced garlic. Mix together.
  5. Pour the sauce into the fried Spam and mix, rotating every 3-5 ish minutes.
  6. Once the rice is done, top with the Spam, and add your kimchi on the side. Eat with nori seaweed for little hand-rolled sushi.

Enjoy, and see you next week on another installment of Dormiliciouse!
