Softball
Seattle University Softball took on Santa Clara University at Logan Field May 1-3. The Redhawks got swept by the Broncos with scores of 2-7, 0-1 and 6-7, respectively.
In the series opener, Junior Avari Morris, Freshman Aurora Zepeda and Sophomore Allie Fales combined for five hits while Senior Brooklyn Jones scored two runs. Zependa led defense, claiming five putouts. The Broncos pulled ahead mid-game, and the Redhawks claimed an RBI in the bottom of the fourth, but the game finished as a loss with a home run by Santa Clara.
The next day, Seattle U put on a strong defense. Sophomore Maya Mesa played a complete game, striking out five players in seven innings and Graduate Jay Ross collected seven putouts. Santa Clara scored once in the second inning with an RBI. Senior Ava Sin tied the second record for all-time doubles in a single season with 19 doubles.
The Redhawks gave it their all in the third game of the weekend, scoring in the first, third and sixth innings. Senior Taylor Fitch scored her 13th home run of the season, tying for the third-most home runs in a single season. Ross once again led defense with seven putouts. Santa Clara, who trailed Seattle U for most of the game, scored three times in the final inning, winning the game by just one point.
Softball hits the road May 7 to take on the University of San Diego in San Diego, Calif. For their final series of the regular season.
Baseball
Baseball battled Saint Mary’s in Moraga, Calif., May 1-3, ending the weekend with one loss and two wins.
The series opener was a 1-11 struggle for the Redhawks, though the score was tied until the bottom of the seventh inning. Junior Payton Knowles scored the game’s only point at the top of the first inning.
In the second game of the series, which Seattle U won 8-7, Senior Tyler Horner scored a 3-run home run in the sixth inning and Freshman Tyler Jackson scored a 2-run home run in the seventh. Another five unanswered runs in the sixth inning brought the Redhawks to victory over the Gaels. Senior Luke Alwood pitched 4.2 scoreless innings and struck out two players.
The final game of the series was a 5-4 win for the Redhawks. The team put on a strong offensive performance, scoring all five runs in the second and fifth innings. Junior Royce Hale hit a home run, Senior Jared Stevenson hit a 2-RBI double and Junior Jake Beauchaine hit a 2-RBI single. Junior Micah Hagler allowed just four runs in six innings and Senior Blake Smith allowed one hit; he also threw three shutout innings.
The Redhawks made their way back home May 5 to take on their crosstown rivals, the University of Washington. Seattle U scored all their runs in the first inning, and it was all they needed to defeat the Huskies 4-3, completing the season series victory.
In the bottom of the first, Senior infielder Kenny Rhein drove a single through the six hole to give the Redhawks their first baserunner of the game. A couple of singles from Horner and Hale brought Rhein around to score, giving the Redhawks an early lead 1-0. Horner came around to score on a double from Redshirt Sophomore outfielder Ryder Manale, then a single to right field from Jackson cleared the bases, giving Seattle U a 4-0 lead early in the game.
Despite the Huskies scoring three runs in the top of the second off Seattle U starter Senior left-handed pitcher Jake Morell, the Redhawks’ bullpen, consisting of Sophomore right-handed pitcher Issac Hallam, Redshirt Senior right-handed pitcher Ryan Stone and Alwood, was able to toss seven scoreless innings to lead Seattle U to their second victory against UW this season.
The Redhawks will stay home for their last home series of the season, taking on the Broncos of Santa Clara May 8-10 at Bannerwood Park.
Men’s Golf
Men’s golf finished their season May 1-3 in Fairfield, Calif., by competing in their first-ever WCC Championship. They entered the long weekend looking to continue their success from last year’s WAC Championship win and did not disappoint.
Number three seed Will Koch voluntarily withdrew from play due to a sprained ankle, but his teammates played well. Freshman Jacob Kang recorded a career best and second-ever top-ten finish, taking third place with a score of 4 under par. Junior Kevin Li claimed a top-ten finish as well, claiming eighth place with 4 under par.
Sophomore Walker Lamb and Senior Ben Ragland tied for 30th with scores of 219, just 3 over par. Sophomore Conrad Chisman took 50th with 224, 8 over par.
The team wrapped up their season on a high note, ending the weekend ranked 5 out of 12.
