Women’s Golf
Seattle University Women’s Golf completed their regular season at the Bobcat Desert Classic April 13–15. The Redhawks placed first out of 13 teams for their first team win of the season, led by Freshman Zoe Rubichon, who was the lowest scorer for the team.
Rubichon finished in a tie for second place, shooting a combined 214 (two under par) over the three-day tournament. Her lowest score came during the first round, shooting three under par (69). On day two, she shot a 73 in round two, then on the final day, shot a 72 (even par) in round three.
Additionally, Freshman Blayne Brown had her best performance of the season finishing in fifth place, shooting one under par. Her performance was highlighted by a three-under-par second round.
The Redhawks will head to Fairfield, Calif. for the West Coast Conference (WCC) championships April 25–27.
Track and Field
Seattle U Track and Field posted multiple team and personal records this weekend, competing in the Bryan Clay Invite April 16–18 and the Larry Byerly Invite April 17–18.
At Bryan Clay, Sophomore Seku Sanders broke the school record in the 800m with a time of 1:48.75, while Sophomore Annabelle Clapp ran a personal best 2:11.52 in the 800m, third all-time in school history. Additionally, Sophomore Jeremy Podson set a PR in the men’s 1500m, clocking in at 3:57.38, while Freshman Roman Radecki set his own PR in the 5000m, finishing at 14:48.32.
At the Lady Byerly, more PR’s followed. Sophomore Porter Buck set the school’s 10th-best time in steeplechase, putting up a 9:49.52 time, while Graduate Kristina Shkalenkova and Freshman Mira Danish set PRs in the women’s 800m with times of 2:17.33 and 2:19.76, respectively. In the 1500m, Junior Mila Tsai led the way with a time of 4:45.83, while Sophomore Lydia Dale set a new best in steeplechase with an 11:28.37 time, the seventh-best time in school history.
Next up for Seattle U is the OSU High Performance Meet in Corvallis, Ore., hosted by Oregon State University, May 1–2.
Baseball
Seattle U Baseball hit the road for a Southern California trip last week. The Redhawks took two of three games against the University of San Diego 7–4 and 11–6, respectively, before dropping the series finale 12–13. The Redhawks then dropped a competitive 9–5 ball game against San Diego State University April 20.
In the University of San Diego series, Senior catcher Tyler Horner led the way for the Redhawks with three home runs, bringing his total to five on the season, while Junior utility player Payton Knowles led the way with nine hits in all three games. On the bump, Redshirt Senior starting pitcher Travis Farrell put up a second straight quality start in game one, going six innings and allowing three earned runs in their game one victory, while Senior relief pitcher Luke Alwood held down the mound in game two, striking out five batters and allowing one hit in their comeback win.
Against the Aztecs, Knowles continued his hot streak with three hits, bringing his weekend total to 12, while also scoring three runs in the game. Additionally, Knowles was named the WCC’s Player of the Week, joining Farrell and Redshirt Sophomore pitcher Kale Hammer as the team’s third WCC honoree this season.
The Redhawks return to Bannerwood Park this week for a conference home series against the Waves of Pepperdine University, April 24–26.
Women’s Tennis
Seattle U Women’s Tennis concluded their regular season in Oregon against the University of Portland April 18, dropping their match against the Pilots 2–4.
On the singles front, Junior Lamija Avdic and Senior Lola Tavcar both picked up victories in their matchups. Avdic won her matchup 6–3, 7–5, her team-high fifth singles win on the year, while Tavcar, in her final collegiate match, rallied back from losing a set to win 1–6, 6–3, 6–0.
Additional performances include Senior Larissa Teramura having a strong singles outing. Before her match concluded, Teramura went up in her third set following a 6–7, 4–0, 6–2 showing.
Tavcar and Junior Daria Nazarenko were both named to the WCC Women’s Tennis All-Academic team April 22, while Teramura and senior Natalia Michta were named as honorable mentions.
