Men’s Basketball
After a historic win, Redhawks’ Men’s Basketball rose to the spotlight before facing defeat in an exciting weekend at the Resort World Classic. Seattle U defeated Stanford University 77-69 Nov. 21 after recovering from Stanford’s 13-point lead in the second half. This was the Redhawks’ first-ever win over Stanford. Seattle U ended the game on a 23-6 run after falling behind 57-44 late in the game. The Redhawks also forced 16 Stanford turnovers and had eight blocks in the win.
Keeping that momentum, Seattle U went to the Resorts World Classic in Las Vegas this weekend. They defeated the Texas State University Bobcats 66-52 in their first game thanks to a strong second half. The Redhawks, who were tied 33-33 at halftime, shot 61.9% in the second half and limited Texas State to eight field goals after halftime. Seattle U also out-rebounded Texas State 38-30 and held them to 36.4% shooting for the game.
However, Seattle U lost a close championship game to UC Santa Barbara,71-74, Saturday, Nov. 29, ending their four-game winning streak. In the ending minutes, UCSB outscored Seattle U 11-6 and finished the game with a plus-nine rebounding advantage while Seattle U went just 7-12 from the free throw line.
The Redhawks came back home Dec. 3 to take on their Division 3 foes from the south, the University of Puget Sound Loggers. Despite a first quarter that saw a lot of mistakes from Seattle U, ending with a score that was too close for comfort at 44-32, the Redhawks only allowed a total of nine points in the second half, taking home the win 97-43.
Redshirt-Freshman guard Ray Adams scored his first career points in the first half after tipping in a missed lay-up attempt from Senior guard JoJo Murphy. Adams ended the night also picking up a double-double, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Murphy also showed off his scoring ability, putting up 18 points, his season high.
Men’s basketball currently holds an overall record of 6-2. They take on the University of Texas El Paso Dec. 7 at Climate Pledge Arena for the 1966 Legacy Game.
Volleyball
Volleyball shocked both themselves and the conference Nov. 22 by upsetting the Oregon State University Beavers 3-2. In that game, Seattle U defeated Oregon State for the first time in program history. After a good start winning the first two sets, the Redhawks lost the third and fourth sets, but they won the fifth set 15-10. In the match, Seattle U recorded nine total blocks, five service aces and over 60 digs. Blocks, digs, aces and strong serves all contributed to this win, making it a stand out game for defensive efforts.
Unfortunately, Seattle U’s volleyball season came to an end on Nov. 29, just a week later. They lost to Santa Clara University 0-3 (21-25, 20-25, 22-25) in their last game. The Redhawks put up a strong fight but were unable to overcome the early set disadvantages, finishing the match with a .198 team hitting percentage and 38 total kills.
Men’s and Women’s Swimming
This past weekend at the Northwest Collegiate Invitational in Boise, both swim teams had excellent form. With 2,086.50 points, the men’s team won first place overall, while the women’s team finished third out of eight schools with 961.50 points.
The meet resulted in growth on many levels, not just in terms of team results. Together, the Redhawks added 26 new entries to the school’s top 10 records, including multiple relays and standout swims in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard relay events. Seattle U swimmers also recorded 12 personal best times throughout the meet. As the season goes on, this performance indicates progress for Seattle U swimming.
Women’s Basketball
Women’s Basketball went 1-1 on their road-trip to Miami, Fla. defeating Presbyterian College Nov. 28, 72-61 and falling to Florida International University Nov. 30, 59-64. The Redhawks came back home Dec. 2, defeating Evergreen State College with a dominant score of 102-37.
Grad-Student guard Ella Brubaker led the way for the Redhawks in their victory against Presbyterian dropping 24 points with four rebounds in just over 26 minutes of play. Redshirt Senior forward Tamia Stricklin came one rebound away from picking up a double-double, dropping 10 points with nine rebounds.
It was a team effort in their assertive victory over Evergreen State. Five of Seattle U’s players racked up double digit points, including a double-double from Junior center Lucija Milkovic. The Croatia native dropped a season high 18 points, along with 11 rebounds. Milkovic was followed closely by Freshman guard Chloe Emanga who picked up 12 points with seven rebounds and three assists, shooting over 50% from the field.
The Redhawks have an eleven day break before they take on CSU Bakersfield Dec. 13 at home.
