With a new school record, two winning tennis debuts, and a neck and neck game on the road, the Seattle University Redhawks have rung in the new year with an exciting start to the athletic season.

Hargreaves Sets Record as Track and Field Begin Season

Seattle U Track and Field began their indoor season at the University of Washington (UW) Indoor Preview Jan. 12. Junior Lilianne Hargreaves set a new school record, running the women’s 3k in a time of 9:45. Impressive performances were seen from the team overall, as Sophomore Miguel Rosario III continued his impressive young career at Seattle U, placing second in the men’s 60 meter dash finals with a time of 6.80 seconds. Sophomore Jocelyn Garcia set a personal best in the women’s 400 meter and Sophomore Zoe Tibbo PR’d in the triple jump.

The team will soon return to UW for the Invitational meet Jan. 26-27.

Men’s Tennis Splits Back-to-Back in Bozeman

Men’s Tennis had an eventful start to their season, beating out UC Riverside 4-1 in Bozeman, Mont. Jan. 13. In the doubles matches, Senior Julian Worn and Junior Michael Frank eked out a 7-6 victory with Junior Filip Stipic and Sophomore Yu-Han Hsieh finalizing the score with a 6-3 follow-up.

Stipic, Worn and Redshirt Junior Jun Sasagawa each won their singles matches as well. However, they closed out opening weekend with a 1-6 loss to host Montana State University (MSU) Jan. 14.

Jan. 20 and 21 they will travel to Eugene, Oregon to face off against the University of the Pacific and the University of Oregon.

Women’s Tennis Opens 1-1

The women’s team also made the trek to Montana, prevailing 5-2 against the University of North Dakota Jan. 13 before losing 2-5 against MSU Jan. 14. Sophomore Liliya Dimova and Freshman Yuna Kadowaki brought the Redhawks back from an initial loss, and Freshman Lamija Avdic and Sophomore Jade Quintana secured the point. In the singles game, Junior Elena Kraleva and Avdic each won both of their matches, 6-1 and 6-2. Quintana did so as well with scores of 6-0 and 6-4.

Jan. 19 and 28 they will host the University of Portland and Saint Mary’s College on the Seattle U Tennis Courts, respectively.

Moore’s Career High Not Enough As Women’s Basketball Goes 0-2

With a 1-14 record overall, Seattle U Women’s Basketball has faced a tough string of losses this month, most recently against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Jan. 11 and University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) Jan. 13. The Redhawks were initially able to stay ahead against UTRGV, with a four point lead at the half. But, a late 10-0 run from the Vaqueros would put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter as the Redhawks would fall 84-77. Despite the loss, the game saw a standout performance from Sophomore guard Makayla Moore, who scored a career-high 23 points.

That competitive start could not be found two days later, as UTA grasped an early 10-point lead. The Redhawks would fall again, this time 72-54.

Women’s basketball will host Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) Jan. 18.

Men’s Basketball Drop Two Close Games

Seattle U Men’s Basketball faced off against UTA Jan. 13. Despite leading the first half 36-34, the Redhawks ultimately fell behind later in the game, finishing 80-75. Seattle U won the turnover battle 13 to 19, but were ultimately outrebounded 33 to 27. Redshirt Sophomore guard John Christofilis and Senior guard Alex Schumacher led the team in scoring, with 22 and 21 points respectively.

The tight loss came after another close matchup against UTRGV Jan. 11, which saw Seattle U barely fall 81-80 in overtime while Redshirt Senior guard Cameron Tyson went out after suffering an ankle injury.

While the team has displayed an impressive 9-2 record in home games, the past weekend’s losses ended a four-game win streak and brought their away record to 1-5.

The Redhawks will return to Texas Jan. 18 to play SFA.

With a new season only beginning for so many teams, as well as opening weekend for softball and baseball in mid-February, the Redhawks have much to look forward to in the coming weeks.
