Going from releasing his first EP in 2018 to being nominated for a Grammy (Song of the Year) in 2021 is a big stride to make in just three rotations around the sun—but singer-songwriter JP Saxe did just that.
Currently, he is traveling the World on his “A Grey Area” Tour celebrating his newest album of the same title, featuring the artists Lizzy McAlpine, Tiny Habits and Camilo. The album was released in September 2023 and recently just had eight of its original 13 tracks released as a live album. The album exposes stories about love, loss and life happenings that many could find relatable.
I first listened to him when I saw his Grammy nomination in 2021, and after hearing the intensity of his and Julia Michaels’ vocals together, I could tell this is a singer who knows exactly what it is to feel the things he sings about (not that other musicians don’t).
The performance he put on was enjoyable, with much of it being songs from his new album and a sprinkling of his more popular tracks thrown in. Going in, I thought it was going to be a much lower energy atmosphere given the emotional nature of the majority of his music. However, with the full band and an enthusiastic crowd, the energy was uplifting and vibrant, which probably kept me from crying more than I did (which was three times).
In the end, if you find yourself reading this little review and are in one of the cities he’s traveling to, I recommend checking out his show.
