Baseball

The Seattle University men’s baseball team nearly put a comeback together April 10 against the University of British Columbia. After being dumpstered 8-0 through seven innings, patience at the plate allowed first-years Jackson Lind and Colin Curry along with senior Gavin Rork to score the game’s first three runs. Rork would later plate two more with an RBI single, but the comeback would stop there, leaving the final score sitting at 8-5 Thunderbirds.

An April 15 and 16 three-game series against Sacramento State University went 2-1 in favor of the Hornets. Game one featured an ugly performance from the Redhawk bullpen, surrendering 12 runs after starter junior Peter Chronowski was forced out after four innings. Game 2 tilted in favor of the Redhawks with senior Matt Boissoneault getting on base three times and powering Seattle U to an 8-2 victory. Boissoneualt was again a standout in Game 3, hitting two home runs in a game that the Redhawks would go on to lose 7-4. Also notable was junior infielder Shane Jamison who hit safely in all three games and extended his hitting streak to seven consecutive games.

The team will look to get back on track in a pivotal game against Washington State University April 20 at Bannerwood Park.

Softball

A home series against Grand Canyon University April 15 and 16 brought a 16-game WAC win streak to a close for the Redhawks.

The Redhawks were never able to find their groove in a 7-1 defeat in Game 1, as the Lopes junior starter Ariel Thompson allowed just one run on five hits. Seattle U’s bats were further flummoxed by Grand Canyon first-year Jacie Hambrick in Game 2. Hambrick threw a two-hit shutout as the Redhawks fell 3-0. Fielding errors sunk the Redhawks in both games with many of the 6 defensive errors on the day directly leading to runs. Not to be outdone, Thompson returned to the circle in Game 3, and overcame some late control issues to throw a no hit shutout en route to a 6-0 final score.

The Redhawks will hit the road next week and prepare for a series against California Baptist on April 22.

Track and Field

The Redhawk team competed in two crucial events this week—the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 14 and the Mt. Sac Relays on April 15. Junior Nicole Whittern stood out, placing third in the javelin throw at the Brian Clay Invitational, with a mark of 41.79m. The invitational marks Whittern’s third consecutive finish in the top six. Sophomore Gus Harquail posted a 9:20.57 in the steeplechase, and a 3:54.49 mark in the 1500 meter run, numbers good enough for second and sixth respectively in the Seattle U record books.

The 4x400m relay event also featured a quality performance from sophmore Maya McCabe, junior Chloe Deleissegues, first-year Taylor Marks and senior Tricht Jocelyn. The four recorded the second fastest time in Redhawk history, with McCabe also hitting second of all time in her own 400m and 800m events.

The athletes will look to build up their times at the Oregon Relays from April 21 to 23 in Eugene.

Women’s Tennis

The Redhawks clinched a playoff berth in a statement win over a tough Dixie State team April 14 in Phoenix, AZ. The doubles point was a sweep for Seattle U, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. First-year Liliya Dimova took down Ya-Chi Hsu 6-1, 6-1 to open singles and the Redhawks seemed poised to take it home. However, after seniors Aranza Alvarez Sanabria (3-6, 2-6) and Jillian Rasmussen (6-7, 1-6) lost their sets against Rachel Mellor and Angelina Amelkina respectively, the road ahead looked tougher. Fortunately, first-year Mireia Fehr (6-1, 7-5) and junior Jade Lancaster (6-4, 6-1) put the Redhawks back in the driver’s seat, and third-year Jade Quintana (7-5, 6-1) took them home for a final score of 5-2

Despite the win, they were unable to carry momentum to an April 15 contest against New Mexico State. Seattle U won a nailbiter of a doubles point 1-6, 7-5, 7-6, but three losses by Lancaster (0-6, 2-6), Quintana (1-6, 1-6) and senior Hannah Grossman (1-6, 3-6) put the Redhawks on the back foot early. The first-year duo of Dimove (6-3, 6-0) and Fehr (0-6, 6-0, 7-5) tied the series back up, but Alvarez Sanabria lost a close final game 0-6, 6-4, 3-6.

The Redhawks will begin the WAC tournament on April 22.

Women’s Golf

The April 12 Chambers Bay Invitational finished off the Seattle U women’s golf season in style. Graduate student Keishia Lugito and first-year Rivekka Jumagulova finished in an exact tie for 52nd place (each scoring 237) as the highest Redhawks on the board. In individual competition, third-year Megan Kelly finished with a score of 233, good for 34th place.

The team will fly down south to Texas April 18 for the WAC championships at the Riverhill Country Club.
