Week In Review: Nov. 15 – Nov. 21
Men’s Soccer
The Seattle University men’s soccer team lost to the University of Portland Pilots 2-3 Thursday, Nov. 18 during the first round of the NCAA tournament. Graduate Student Noa Meza scored the opening goal in the 24th minute assisted by Senior Alex Acton-Petronotis. The Pilots countered with goals in the 27th, 30th and 63rd minutes. The Redhawks responded to the Pilots with one goal in the 81st minute, but were unable to complete the late-game comeback for the third straight game.
Seattle U created many goal scoring opportunities, resulting in 20 total shots, nine of which were on goal. Sophomore Levonte Johnson led the team with four shots on goal and scored the Redhawk’s second goal in the 81st minute.
The loss concludes the season and the following nine seniors’ careers as Redhawks: Alex Acton-Petronotis, Richard Bedats, Josh Castrillon, Akili Kasim, Noe Meza, Dante Perez, Sam Tessler, Malte Thesenvitz and Hal Uderitz.
Women’s Basketball
While on the road, the Redhawks women’s basketball team picked up one win and one loss. Nov. 18, the team lost 63-86 against Long Beach State. The team then bounced back Nov. 21, defeating Sacramento State by the score of 71-67.
In the first quarter against Long Beach State, the team had a combined 13 turnovers. Players coming off the bench were key for the Redhawks, scoring 32 points. Senior Courtney Murphy secured nine rebounds—the second-most rebounds of her career. Sophomore Irena Korolenko sank nine points in the fourth quarter, all from three-point shots. The team shot 40% from deep and drained a season-high 10 three-pointers.
The team’s second game on the road resulted in a win against the Sacramento State Hornets. Their tenacity on the defensive end of the floor was a contributing effort in their win. The Redhawks held the Hornets to a mere 37% from the field during the first half.
Guard Courtney Murphy led the scoring with 21 points. Senior Bree Calhoun followed closely behind with 18 points in the game and redshirt senior McKenzi Williams scored 15 points.
Men’s Basketball
At the Redhawk Center Nov. 18, the Seattle U men’s basketball team beat the Morgan State Bears by 13 points. The game ended with a 93-80 score. The game’s four highest competitors all scored over 10 points.
Redshirt Sophomore Cameron Tyson led the team in scoring with 26 points. Tyson secured the Redhawk’s opening 12-0 lead. Of his opening eight shots, six of them were three-pointers. Sophomore Darrion Trammell scored 16 points for the Redhawks, and freshman Kobe Williamson put up 14 points. Junior Emeka Udenyi played 26 minutes and added 12 points.
The Bears stepped up their defense in the second half, and Tyson was unable to score any points as a result. The Redhawks ended the game shooting 47% from the field and 50% from outside the arc. The team made 15 out of 30 three-point attempts.
