Men’s Week in Review

Basketball

The Seattle University Men’s Basketball team had two away games this past week. They first faced the Grand Canyon University Lopes on Jan. 23.

Notable performances from Redshirt Senior Delante Jones and Redshirt Junior Terrell Brown paved the way for the Redhawks, with Jones making three layups and Brown securing free throws to keep the match close in the first quarter.

The match continued as a back- and forth battle, but unfortunately the final score was 77-80 in favor of the Lopes.

The Redhawks redeemed themselves with a win on Jan. 25 against California State University, Bakersfield. They had a one point lead in the first half and continued to further that lead into the second half with a final score of 79-86.

Highlights of the game included Brown, who put up 21 points on the board, and Senior Morgan Means who had 19 points and an all-time personal best—13 rebounds in a single game.

Their next game is on Feb. 1, where the team will host California Baptist University at the Showare center.

Swimming

The men’s swimming team had a spectacular finish to their regular season. The last meet was held at home this weekend against Simon Fraser University. The final score was 165-90 with 10 first place finishes out of the 14 total events.

Individual event wins included Sophomore Juan Varela in the 1650- yard freestyle, First-year Connor Barringer in the 200-yard freestyle, Senior Ryan Shaw in the 100-yard backstroke and Junior Jack Neton in the 200-yard breaststroke, which led the Redhawks to an overall win.

The team also had a podium sweep in the 50-yard freestyle, with Junior Isaac Parker, Sophomore Tyler Goodspeed and Senior Greg Raper respectively securing the top three finishes.

The Redhawks will continue to soar heading into Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships, slated to take place late February in Houston, Texas.

Tennis

The Seattle U Men’s Tennis team faced two tough opponents, first traveling to compete against Boise State University before facing Idaho State University.

The Redhawks put up a good fight until the end, but could not hold off either opponent. Senior Alex Chan and First-year Lars Schmassmann gained momentum for the Redhawks, but ultimately could not secure the win.

With the season just starting to ramp up, the Redhawks look to secure a win on Feb. 7, where they will face Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana.

Track

Seattle U Track and Field had their second indoor meet of the year at the University of Portland on Jan. 26.

The meet resulted in several first place finishes—the first from Sophomore Zach Gonzalez in the 400 with a time of 50.35 followed by Sophomore Isaiah Payne in the 200 with a time of 22.53.

The Redhawks also had success with relays and a multitude of new personal records in the continuation of their indoor season. The team looks to better these times on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, where they will compete at the University of Washington Invitational.

Women’s Week in Review

Basketball

The Redhawks kicked the week off on Jan. 23 against Grand Canyon University (GCU) at The Redhawk Center. Senior Joana Alves led the team in points, scoring 15. The next top scorer against the Lopes was Sophomore Hailey Vice-Neat with 11, while Sophomore Courtney Murphy and Senior Kamira Sanders both put up nine points for Seattle U.

Unfortunately, GCU secured the final win with a score of 56-48. The Redhawks did not let that deter their spirit, though. Despite the loss, Sanders climbed her way onto the top-10 scoring list at Seattle U—tied for 10th—with 1,258 points.

On Jan. 25 at the Redhawk Center, the team defeated California State University, Bakersfield in a close game with a score of 63-57. Again, Alves scored the most points at 26, with Sanders right behind at 16.

After this match, Sanders is only 28 points away from tying ninth on Seattle U’s all-time career point list. Vice-Neat and Murphy both scored 10 points, while Sophomore McKenzie Williams scored six points.

Basketball will travel to California to play California Baptist University on Feb. 1.

Tennis

The tennis team travelled to Eagle, Idaho to face-off against Boise State University on Jan. 24. Sophomore Martina Asciuto and First-year Jade Lancaster won their singles matches of the day and gave The Redhawks the only wins, resulting in an overall 5-2 loss.

Asciuto won her matches 7-6 and 6-4, while Lancaster lost her first match 1-6 but came back on her other two, 6-4 and 1-0, to secure the final win. Asciuto later played doubles with teammate Sophomore Hannah Grossman, but they lost in a final score of 2-6. Lancaster also paired up with Junior Kyra Jung for doubles play but had the same luck as the others and fell 1-6.

On Jan. 25, the Redhawks were back in action against Idaho State University in Boise, Idaho. This time, Seattle U walked away with an overall win of 4-3. Doubles Asciuto and Grossmen jumped back into play and won in a score of 7-6 while another pair of Redhawks, Jung and Sophomore Jillian Rasmussen, earned the same result in their match.

Individually, Sophomore Alisa Sabotic overtook her opponent in a three set match with scores of 6-1, 1-6 and 6-2. Jung also played a three-set match for the win in scores of 6-3, 3-6 and 7-6. Junior Hannah Gianon won her matches 6-0 and 6-4.

Tennis will kick off their next set of matches against the University of South Dakota on Feb. 1 in Seattle.

Track and field

The Seattle U Women’s Track and Field team continued their season on Jan. 26, where they faced a number of schools at the University of Portland. Both sprints and distance fared well against competitors with many establishing new personal records and securing top finishes for the Redhawks.

Sophomore Courtney Gelmini shaved almost 10 seconds off her previous personal record in the 3k race, while First-year Delaney Griffin took third place in the mile with a time of 5:10.97.

Sophomore Regie Grady also had a notable performance, finishing third overall in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.16.

The Redhawks look to carry this momentum into their next meet, slated to take place Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at the University of Washington Invitational.
