Seattle University women’s tennis team lost 1-6 to University of Washington in a match Saturday at UW’s Nordstrom Tennis Center.
“Kind of an overall theme I thought was getting close games, but they [UW] had the confidence and belief in themselves to take those big points,” said men and women’s head tennis coach Adam Reeb. “What we need to take from this is we belong here, and have confidence and be aggressive and look to win those close points.”
I thought we had a lot of bright spots with number one doubles doing really good, and Michelle at number one singles, and of course Caroline at number 6,” Coach Reeb said.
Freshman Caroline Maltby was the sole player of the game to win any team match points against UW. Keeping it close in two 6-4 sets, Maltby beat UW’s Lana Slavica in a well-fought match. Another notable player during the match was Michelle Lui, the team’s current number-one singles player, who was able to hold her ground against UW’s Stacey Fung, but unfortunately lost in 6-4, 6-3 sets.
“I felt pretty good overall; obviously UW is a really good team. I told the girls they played well enough to show they belong with a team like that,” Coach Reeb said. “One of our strengths is our team unity. The girls get along really well, they enjoy being with each other, and they work hard and get better. And as a coach, that’s the scenario you want.”
The Seattle U women’s team will play their next match against Boise State in Boise, Idaho on Friday, Feb. 3.
After their triumphant 4-3 victory against Portland State, the Seattle U men’s team faltered this week with a tough 7-0 loss against the University of Portland. Sophomore Jeremiah Kalmus fought hard in his match against UP’s Alex Wallace, losing 4-6 in his second set.
“The challenge on the men’s side is injuries…we had four of our ten guys injured, and all four would’ve impactful guys playing on the line- up,” Coach Reeb said. We’ve definitely had to have a lot of guys step up that maybe we weren’t expecting to play right away.”
He said the strength on the men’s side is that the team is brand new.
“I was able to bring in 5 new guys, so we’ve got a good mix of a talented freshman class and then some really good seniors and juniors at veteran leadership,” Coach Reeb said. “We’re competing hard and playing well, and we’re definitely getting better every day.”
The Seattle U Men’s tennis team will play their next match against George Fox University on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Tenis Center at Sand Point.
