Sports Week in Review: Oct. 25 – Oct. 31

Men’s Soccer

The Seattle University men’s soccer team played two outstanding games this Halloween weekend against Houston Baptist University and Chicago State University. The Redhawks played under the lights Friday, Oct. 29 against Houston Baptist University. In a short turnaround, they played Chicago State University Sunday, Oct. 31. 

The team played an exciting game Friday night, resulting in a 4-0 win. Junior Declan McGlynn brought an exciting energy to the field, showcasing his immense skill by scoring two of the team’s four goals unassisted. Seattle U led by one at halftime, but broke the game open in the second half scoring three goals in less than 20 minutes. In addition to McGlynn’s two goals, Sophomore Levonte Johnson scored in the 61st minute, and Senior Sam Tessler notched the fourth goal in the 79th minute.  

The Redhawks game on Halloween resulted in a 4-1 win over Chicago State. Seattle U’s first goal came from Friday night’s star McGlynn in the 24th minute. Seattle U went on to score two more goals in the first half. Johnson scored in the 34th minute following a vital interception and assist from Freshman Campbell Strong. In the 84th minute, Graduate Student Noe Meza scored the final goal of the game after receiving a great pass from Freshman Mo Mohamed to put an exclamation mark on the Redhawks victory. 

The Redhawks’ next game is Nov. 6 for Senior Day against San Jose State at Championship Field. 

Cross Country 

The Seattle U Cross Country team traveled to Riverside, Calif. Oct. 30 to compete in the Western Athletic Conference Championships. The Redhawk mens team raced in the 8k whereas the women ran the 6k. 

The women’s team placed sixth overall as eight runners set new personal records. Seattle U’s top three runners for this tournament were Sophomores Emily Harris (22:03.6), Rowan Cuadrado (22:13.5) and Abby Smith (22:25.0). The team’s final score was 192 points. 

The Seattle U men’s team placed 12th with Freshman Giuliano Scasso leading the team with a time of 25:44.1. Rounding out Seattle U’s top three runners were Sophomore Alex Franklin (26:05.1) and Junior Ansel Pendley-Griffin (26:11.1). The team’s final score was 319 points.  

Seattle U Cross Country continues their season Nov. 12 at the NCAA West Regionals in Sacramento, Calif..

Women’s Soccer

The Seattle University women’s soccer team drew against California Baptist University Oct. 30. With a 0-0 score after double overtime, the game was called a draw. Seniors Sydney Carr and Gabe Jillings nearly won the game for the Redhawks with two shots off the post. 

The women’s team concluded their season after the match finishing with a record of 7-8-4, but not before honoring senior players. The team honored Seniors Emily Bunnell, Carr, Natalie Dixon, Bailey Hall, Lauren Hudson, Jillings, Gina Leete, Leahi Manthei, Mikaela Morey, Sebelle Rojas and Claire Varden.  

Women’s Volleyball

The Seattle University women’s volleyball team played two games this week starting Oct. 28 against Grand Canyon University and Oct. 30 against New Mexico State University (NMSU). Unfortunately, Seattle U dropped both games 3-0.

During their first game Oct. 28, the team recorded an impressive 12 blocks. Six of those came  from Senior Azzia MacDonald. Graduate student Sierra Bartley finished the game with seven kills, falling just short of recording a fourth-straight game with double digit kills. 

Despite appearing in only two sets Oct. 30, Senior Eve Kerschenbaum led the team with eight kills against NMSU.

The Redhawks play Chicago State University Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. 

Women’s Golf 

The Redhawk women’s golf team teed off Oct. 26 at The Clash at Boulder Creek in Boulder City, Nev.. The team finished sixth out of 18 teams with Freshman Rivekka Jumagulova once again being the team’s top performer. She put together another strong performance, finishing in 17th place with a three round total of five-over 221 (72-75-74). 

This tournament marked the conclusion of the women’s golf team’s fall season. They resume play in Feb. 2022 at the Mountain Classic Match Play in Palm Desert, Calif..
