Men’s Week in Review
The Seattle University Basketball team was planning to travel down to Edinburg, Texas, where they are seeded fifth in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). However, due to inclement weather, the Redhawks’ games scheduled Friday, Feb. 19 and Saturday, Feb. 20 at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) have been canceled.
At this time, the games are not rescheduled due to WAC guidelines.
The Redhawks are scheduled to play Friday, Feb. 26 and Saturday, Feb. 27, on homecourt against Grand Canyon University (GCU). Both nights’ tip-off times are at 6 p.m. at the Redhawk Center.
Wednesday, Feb. 17, the Redhawks traveled down to Coral Mountain Golf Club in La Quinta California to compete at The Prestige Individual Invitational.
At the three-day event, Junior Nathan Cogswell led the Redhawks, ending in a tie for 23rd at even-par 216 (71-73-72). Following behind was Senior Gabe Spach (77-70-73), who leveled up his game on the second day of the event. Behind Spach was Junior Jack Rahon (77-74-70), with Freshman Blake Kukula (75-71-77) following two strokes behind Rahon. Finishing the event was Junior Federico Gutierrez with a three-round total of 225 (72-73-80).
Friday, Feb. 19-21, the Redhawks traveled to Palm Desert, Calif. to compete against golfers from a number of universities, including hosts from the University of Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. At the end of the week, the team finished 14th out of 20 teams.
The team will head down to Bandon Dunes, Ore. Sunday, March 7-9 to attend the Bandon Dunes Invitational hosted by Idaho.
The Redhawks came up short against the University of Washington Monday, Feb. 15 with a final score of 0-7.
Despite the fall, players, including Freshmen Mats Krause and Julian Worn, Seniors Eli Ogilvy, Lucas Verbelli and Emilio Monroy and Junior Billy Givens-Jensen competed with energy and showed up better than in the previous match.
The Redhawks hosted their 2021 home opener Saturday, Feb. 20 against the University of Idaho. Despite the 2-5 loss, Freshman Mats Krause won both his singles and doubles play. The Redhawks are now 0-3 for the season.
Friday, Feb. 26, the Redhawks will travel to Newberg, Ore. to play against George Fox University at 5 p.m. The following day, Saturday, Feb. 27, the Redhawks will go against the Portland Pilots at 10 a.m. at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center in Portland, Ore.
Opening Day was scheduled for Friday, Feb. 19 at 12 p.m. against the University of Portland (UP) on Portland’s field. Due to inclement weather in the Portland area, however, the series started Saturday, Feb. 20 with a doubleheader and ended on Sunday, Feb. 21.
Prior to Opening Day, Redhawks’ Austin Lively, a redshirt senior infielder, was named the 2021 Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award (BBCSA) Watch List for the second year in a row. The BBCSA is an annual award for Division I players, based on the athlete’s performance, academics and personal integrity.
Women’s Week in Review
Despite an 84-74 loss on Friday, Feb. 19 at the Redhawk Center against UTRGV, Redhawks’ Bree Calhoun, a junior guard, led the team with 23 points and a career-high 10 assists, five rebounds and four steals in the WAC contest on homecourt.
The team played again Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Redhawk Center against UTRGV, ending the weekend with a victory, 71-64, in overtime. Back to back, Redhawks’ Calhoun led the team with a double-double finishing with 20 points, a career-high 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals all within the first 42 minutes of the game.
The team is set to travel to Phoenix, Ariz. to face GCU on Friday, Feb. 26 and Saturday, Feb. 27. Tip-off time for both games is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Heavy snowfall postponed the Seattle U Volleyball team’s matches Monday, Feb. 15 and Tuesday, Feb. 16. At this time, the matches are not rescheduled due to WAC guidelines. The matches could be rescheduled if there is a common off date in the future for both teams.
The Redhawks are scheduled to take on Dixie State University on Monday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. and Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. Both matches will take place at the Redhawk Center.
The team had planned on traveling to Edinburg, Texas for the WAC against UTRGV on Thursday, Feb. 18; however, inclement weather conditions have forced the weekend games to be rescheduled. The WAC matches were moved to Saturday, Feb. 20.
The team tied against UTRGV with a final score of 1-1. Redhawks’ Sydney Carr, a redshirt junior forward, scored her first goal as a Redhawk in the WAC opener.
Friday, Feb. 19 at the Amy Yee Tennis Center in Seattle, Wash., the Redhawks played against Portland State.
Despite the 1-6 fall against Portland State, the Redhawks’ Senior Hannah Gianan (6-0,6-4) dominated the court; however, the outcome wasn’t enough as the opposing team prevailed in a win. This week’s match places the Redhawks to 0-3 in the season.
The Redhawks are set to travel to Eugene, Ore. Saturday, Feb. 27 to match up against Brigham Young University (BYU) at 11:30 a.m.
The team participated in the 2021 WAC Championship in St. George, Utah Feb. 17-20.
Starting the championship, five Redhawks advanced to the evening’s finals. By the end of the second day, Seattle U placed eighth in the overall standings with a total of 87 points.
Highlights include Sophomore Danika Himes, who swam 2:06.26 in the 200 IM and earned Second Team All-WAC honors. Freshman Maggie Robben came second with a career-best in the B-Final of the 200 IM and a time of 2:07.77. In the C-Final of the 200 IM, Sophomore Tessa Oliver swam 2:09.19, placing fourth. Earning Seattle U a Top 10 performance in the 500 freestyle prelims.
In total, the Redhawks started the evening with an eight-place in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:38.22 with swimmers Marissa Chan, Emilia Culberson and Audrey Dixon.
On the last day of the WAC Women’s Swim Championships, 11 Redhawks competed in various events.
Sophomore Danika Himes celebrated as an All-WAC performer in the 200 breaststroke. Sophomores Isabella Guadiamos (2:27.77) and Caitlin Caruso (2:29.38) both swam in the C-final. Senior Allision Plamondon placed eighth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 53.18. First-year Emilia Culberson placed fourth in the C-Final with a time of 52.73.
The Redhawks recorded a combined time of 3:35.46, placing them eighth overall with a total of 165 points. The team will conclude next week with the diving portion in Flagstaff, Ariz. starting Thursday, Feb. 25 and ending Saturday, Feb. 27.
The team traveled to Tucson, Ariz. and played five games in the Hillenbrand Invitational.
The Redhawks won twice on the first day, Friday, Feb. 19. They beat Southern Utah 9-1 in five innings before dominating New Mexico 8-0 in six innings.
Saturday, Feb. 20, the Redhawks continued their wins, ending with a final score of 11-2 against Southern Utah.
Sunday, Feb. 21, the Redhawks concluded their weekend tournament with another win, ending the evening with a 9-5 victory. Redhawks’ Ally Choate, a senior outfielder, finished strong with a double in the first inning.
The Redhawks will return to Tucson, Ariz. for another weekend to play in the Wildcat Invitational Feb. 25-27.
